'Refuge in Heartland' film to be shown at March 21 engagement symposium
The College of Education's documentary "Refuge in the Heartland"will be part of 1xbet best casino website 's daylong engagement symposium, "The Art of Democracy," Thursday, March 21, in the 1xbet best casino website Student Union.
The film will be shown at 3 p.m. in Room 206 and will be followed by a discussion with art instructor Trina Harlow and video producer Rusty Earl.
Harlow became intimately aware of the world's burgeoning refugee crisis after teaching internationally and meeting many refugees and their families. Since that time, she's been a tireless champion for refugees, and the film tells the stories of families who fled the Congo and were resettled in Kansas.
"Through my doctoral research, I've spent time with refugee children in a middle school in Kansas and a young boy revealed through his artwork something he was forced to do as a child soldier," Harlow said. "Now, he sits in a Kansas school learning fractions, English and photosynthesis. I am a teacher who will not give up and believes that we all have the power — even in some small way — to help the 70 million displaced people in the world."
