Clark M. Hoelscher is the head of the "Out for Equity" Program in the public schools in St. Paul, Minnesota. The program works to improve outcomes for LGBTQ+ students of color. Hoelscher and members of the Biology Graduate Student Association will cover topics regarding heteronormative framing of our understanding of the natural world, opportunities within a queer praxis of life science instruction, and other related themes.
Their second workshop, titled "Beyond the Rainbow: Gender and Sexual Diversity in K-12 Education," will take place from 1-3 p.m. in 21 Bluemont Hall. Hoelscher and College of Education students will cover topics regarding approaches and practices linked to higher outcomes for LGBTQ+ students, the role of teachers in improving these students' lives, and other related topics. Small-group discussions and activities will be used, as well as numerous resources will be shared.
