Abstract:
To protect us from infection, the innate immune system must be able to discriminate harmful pathogens from self cells or harmless commensal bacteria. In his seminar, Vance will describe some of the strategies and underlying molecular mechanisms by which the innate immune system detects intracellular bacterial pathogens. In particular,Vance will focus on how the immune system detects the virulence factors specific to pathogens, and his lab's recent work on multiprotein complexes called inflammasomes will be discussed.
