'What Were You Wearing?' Survivor Art Exhibit

Submitted by Hannah Ens

In recognition of April being Sexual Assault Awareness Month, Union Program Council and the Center for Advocacy, Response and Education have partnered to create the "What Were You Wearing?" Survivor Art Exhibit. This exhibit will be in the William T. Kemper Art Gallery from March 26 through April 6; the gallery is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

This installation provides a tangible response to one of our culture's most pervasive rape myths: that victims are somehow to blame because of their clothing choices. The outfits featured are recreated from the real stories of survivors in the Manhattan-area community. Whether it's a ball gown or a pair of sweats, victims are never to blame. It may seem like a basic question, but asking, "What were you wearing?" can allow self-recrimination to unfairly take root in a victim's mind.
