Banach, senior in communication studies, has gained resilience and fearlessness in part from growing up in a military family.
"With so much change in my childhood, it led me to become a highly resilient and 'glass half full' kind of individual," she said.
Banach won the first pageant she competed in, Miss Kansas USA. On June 8, she will compete for the title of Miss USA. The pageant will air at 7 p.m. on NBC.
