ALTERNATIVE SPRING BREAK: STUDENTS LEND HELPING HANDS TO NATIONAL SERVICE PROJECTS

MANHATTAN -- More than 75 Kansas State University students are bypassing typical spring break activities like going to the beach and partying to spend their week off in service to others.

Alternative spring break 2011, March 20-25, is an opportunity for students to participate in service learning projects coordinated by the K-State School of Leadership Studies. The experience lets students serve and connect with people around the nation.

"The opportunity provides a team setting for students to learn through service and through interaction with their peers," said Trisha Gott, coordinator of programs at the School of Leadership Studies. "Learning about issues such as hunger, poverty and AIDS help students understand the delicate nature of humanity."

Alternative spring break locations include: Florence Crittenton School in Denver, an alternative school for pregnant and parenting teens; Roseland/Pullman Boys and Girls Club in Chicago; Katrina's Kids Project in New 1xbet sports betting , La.; various service projects in Taos, N.M., including Shared Tables, a meals program for the hungry, and Stray Hearts, an animal shelter; St. Jude Children's Hospital in Memphis, Tenn.; AIDS Service in Dallas; and One Mission Galveston, a rebuilding project in Galveston, Texas.

"K-Staters share their passion for service nationally through their actions on site and through the connections they make with other college students serving in the same region," Gott said. "Several of our sites have been longtime partners of the program, such as AIDS Service of Dallas, with whom we have partnered for more than a decade."
