How is it appropriate for our class? What kind of research/support will you need in order to establish credibility? What and how much do you know about this topic? In this warm-up exercise, have the students write down the aforementioned questions and their own answers to said questions regarding their possible topics. Each student will come up with three possible topics, and they will write up on the board their most developed/workable topic.*Discussion of topics: Explore with the class the viability of each topic. Pick out one or two strong topics and then one or two not-so-strong topics. Have each topicТs inventor describe the strengths and weaknesses of their topic. This will serve to flesh out general characteristics of strong vs. weak topics for and limitations of the Persuasive Research essay.Freewrite (10-15 minutes)*Individually, have each student write down on a separate sheet of paper what their most viable topic is. Underneath the topic, the students will list several premises regarding their topic, specifically what they think they know about the topic. How do they know these premises? Where did they learn about these premises? (This can lead to a strong foundation for research with the paper.)*Group Activity: At the end of the freewrite, have each student state aloud his/her position on the topic at hand in a group of three/four.
